Fallout 76’s October patch fixes console crashes, while Infestation auto-completes remain under investigation

The October 20 notes cover quests, C.A.M.P. items, weapons, menus, and several PS5/Xbox crash fixes. Bethesda also names two issues it had not marked resolved.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Update 1.7.27.11 lists platform-specific download sizes, targeted fixes across gameplay and menus, and unspecified crash fixes for Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
  • Bethesda says Infestation auto-completes were still being investigated when the notes were published; the same page lists missing French voice-over for the Burning Springs update as a known issue.
  • Bethesda Support says a server-disconnection error reported after the October 20 update was resolved on October 21.

Check the update version and platform size

Bethesda’s October 20 notes identify the update as version 1.7.27.11. The stated download sizes differ by platform: about 6.7 GB on Steam, 18.5 GB through the Microsoft Store on PC, 18.4 GB on Xbox, and 17.4 GB on PlayStation. These are the update download sizes in the patch notes, not a promise about the total space occupied by the full game. A player comparing the update on two devices should use the size Bethesda lists for each store.

The timing matters because Fallout 76 gained native Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions with the September Slasher update. Windows Central reported that the new versions brought native support to those consoles and described the publisher’s 60fps and 4K claims. The October patch’s wording is narrower: Bethesda says it made “various crash fixes” for Xbox Series and PlayStation 5. That line does not say every crash was fixed or promise that the game will hold a particular frame rate.

The notes fix several quest and event problems

The Activities and Public Events section includes a fix for Tunnel of Love failing to drop unique C.A.M.P. and food recipes. Mad Dog Malone now uses a Minigun, which Bethesda says stops him from seeking other weapons and charging players with his fists. A Daily Ops: Uplink issue that could give the final dialogue to the wrong non-player character is also listed as fixed. These are specific behavior changes, not a redesign of those activities.

The Slasher quest line gets several targeted corrections. Bethesda says article clippings and other Mask of Truth quest objects should persist across character loads. It also fixed a path that let a player advance The Slasher: Masked Truth by picking up another player’s dropped note, plus a repeat-use issue with a grave-digging map stored in a stash. The notes do not describe changes to the broader story or its reward schedule, so returning players should treat these as bug fixes attached to the existing quests.

C.A.M.P. and Pip-Boy changes affect everyday menus

The C.A.M.P., Workshop, and Shelters section includes changes that are easy to miss among combat fixes. Abandoned Nest now has a callout describing the resources it collects and sits in the Resource Collectors category. Several outfits become craftable at an Armor Workbench, the Hunter’s Blind Survival Tent entrance is larger, and the Sir Loin Collectron’s item pool received several corrections. Bethesda also fixed missing textures, lighting colors, audio, and placement issues in specific decorations.

The Pip-Boy section addresses navigation and display problems. It fixes a case where the interface could stay on screen after a simultaneous Inspect and Move C.A.M.P. action, and another where the lockpicking menu could open over the Pip-Boy. The patch also changes the menu transition before Map or Perks opens and adds Unique Effect text to the Pip-Boy and trade menus. A player who opens a weapon or item screen frequently may notice these changes more than the more specialized cosmetic fixes.

Infestation rewards changed, but one behavior stayed open

Bethesda fixed several weapon and effect display issues. The notes mention a Cosmic Knife appearance that could not return to its default, a mismatch between displayed and applied damage on some explosive cryo weapons, and Gunther’s Big Iron using regular .45 ammo with a Prime Receiver. They also list display corrections for Icemen’s, plus explosive damage calculation work on Gamma Gun, Cremator, Resolve Breaker, and Hellstorm Missile Launcher. Those entries are more precise than a general promise to rebalance every weapon.

The Infestations section has both a change and an unresolved problem. Electric Absorption should now trigger against Infestation enemies, and the Boss Skull label should no longer overlap the boss name. Bethesda increased the Scrip reward for finishing an Infestation. In the same section, it says the team was aware of Infestations completing automatically and was investigating a solution. That sentence is important for players deciding whether the patch fully addresses the activity: the reward changed, while the auto-complete behavior was still listed as under review.

A same-day disconnection report was marked resolved

A Bethesda community manager posted on the r/fo76 issue thread on October 20 that the team was looking into player reports of being disconnected across platforms after the update. Bethesda Support’s separate error page says an issue causing a “Disconnected From Server” message was resolved on October 21. Those posts describe the status of that specific incident. They do not prove that every later connection problem has the same cause or that no player can receive the error again.

The support page says to check the Bethesda Status Portal first when the error appears, then use platform-specific network troubleshooting if servers are operational. That order helps separate a service issue from a local console or connection problem.

French voice-over remains a named known issue

The patch notes include a separate known issue: the Burning Springs update’s voice-over is unavailable in French because of production difficulties. Bethesda recommends enabling subtitles and says it intends to restore the French voice-over. This is a language availability issue rather than a console stability fix. French-speaking players deciding whether to start the update should know that the text and audio support are not identical in the current release.

The notes do not give a date for the voice-over return. They also do not state that the problem affects other languages. Keep the scope attached to Bethesda’s wording: French voice-over for Burning Springs is missing, and the developer recommends subtitles. A later patch may change that status, but players should check the current support page or in-game options before expecting a specific restoration date.

Use the patch notes as a list of fixes, not a performance guarantee

The October 20 update covers several small but concrete defects across quest progression, weapons, UI, C.A.M.P. objects, and console crashes. That breadth can make it tempting to read the patch as a full stability reset after the native console release. Bethesda’s own notes do not make that claim. They list several crash fixes for Xbox Series and PS5, and they name an Infestation auto-complete issue that remained under investigation when the page was published.

If you are checking whether one particular problem changed, search for its exact item in the relevant section and compare the game’s current version. For an active disconnection error, consult Bethesda’s current status page before changing local network settings. For the French voice-over, turn on subtitles if you want to follow Burning Springs now. Those steps follow the limits and directions in Bethesda’s public notes without assuming the patch solved issues it did not mark resolved.
