THE SHORT VERSION

  • Minecraft Dungeons II launched September 29, 2026. Mojang lists Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Windows and Steam, and advertises solo or up to four-player online and couch co-op.
  • The Sift is playable in Dungeons II at launch. Mojang says the dimension is also coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, but has not yet detailed how that version will work or how it will differ.
  • Xbox Wire listed day-one Game Pass availability for Cloud, Console, Handheld and PC through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Subscription catalogs can change, so check the current listing before relying on access.

The Sift is in the dungeon sequel now, not yet in Minecraft proper

Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, with The Sift available in its launch build. Mojang’s Minecraft Live recap separately says The Sift is planned for Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027. Xbox Wire calls it Minecraft’s first new dimension in over 14 years. The launch article ties the dimension to rifts appearing across the Overworld. The main-game announcement gives only a year, not a day or month.

Xbox Wire says Mojang had not yet explained how Java or Bedrock players will enter The Sift or how that version will differ from its Dungeons II appearance. Those access instructions and feature details remain unpublished.

The launch spans consoles and PC, with Game Pass listed separately

Mojang’s launch post lists Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Windows and Steam. It describes solo play and online or couch co-op for up to four players. This is the confirmed platform list for launch. The post does not specify whether all platforms share matchmaking, so check the version and multiplayer settings used by the friends you plan to join.

Xbox Wire’s September Game Pass schedule lists Minecraft Dungeons II for Cloud, Console, Handheld and PC on September 29. The listed access categories were Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The page called it a day-one Game Pass release, which is useful for subscribers comparing the monthly option with a store purchase. Game Pass catalogs can change after launch; treat that article as the launch-day entitlement record and check the current library before planning a long co-op campaign around access.

The Game Pass listing covers Xbox’s cloud and console routes as well as PC, but it does not replace Mojang’s platform list. Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Windows or Steam players should use their own storefront to see the version and price available to them. A platform name in the launch post confirms availability; it does not specify local pricing, a cross-buy entitlement or a save-transfer policy.

The Illager High Council is the threat that opens the story

Mojang sets the sequel after the events of the first Minecraft Dungeons. New rifts appear across the Overworld, some mobs become infused with strange energy, and sculk spreads over large areas. The launch article identifies the Illager High Council as the force behind the disturbances: the Prime Enchanter, Supreme Evoker and Grand Illusioner coordinate attacks across the Overworld. The setup gives the group a defined objective while the adventure moves between familiar terrain and a new dimension.

The Sift is more than a new backdrop in the publisher’s description. Mojang’s launch article lists unfamiliar mobs, colorful environments, hazards and rules that players have to learn, and names Meadow and Carapace as two of its areas. The announcement does not publish a full biome list, so those two names should not be mistaken for the complete dimension. It also does not describe the Sift as a replacement for the Overworld; the sequel sends players between both spaces.

Movement also changes for players who finished the first Dungeons. Mojang’s September recap says the original used separate level-based missions, while Dungeons II connects areas into a shared world and adds a jump. The recap describes rifts as the route into the Sift: find one in the world and it transports the hero to the new dimension. Mojang does not list every rift location or say whether other entry points exist, so players should expect discovery rather than a complete map in the launch note.

The launch build gives players a way to see some of the Sift’s mobs, blocks and environments. Mojang has not promised that every Dungeons II creature or mechanic will transfer unchanged to Java and Bedrock. Xbox Wire says the main-game version has not yet been fully explained, so treat the current dimension as a preview of the announced feature rather than a complete list of what Minecraft will receive.

Xbox Wire adds a little more about conditions inside The Sift: shifting tides can affect a player and nearby characters, while hazardous blocks change how the party explores. Its article does not publish a timetable for those conditions or list every effect. That is enough to set a useful expectation for a group entering the dimension: the rift leads into areas with their own rules, so familiar equipment and movement may need adjusting once the party arrives.

Groups can play together on the couch or online

Mojang advertises solo play and up to four-player online or couch co-op. Xbox Wire’s official Dungeons II product description also says players can team up through “couch, online and mixed co-op,” or use matchmaking. The description confirms that mixed co-op is offered, but it does not specify the exact platform combinations or settings it supports. Xbox also notes that online console co-op requires a platform-specific subscription. That product-page wording applies to Dungeons II; it is not a preview of the separate Java/Bedrock implementation.

The sequel’s equipment system remains a large part of choosing a build. Mojang lists weapons, armor, enchants, talismans and artifacts among the gear players find and combine. Game Informer’s reviewer tested the Xbox Series X|S version and described the item-driven build system as flexible, while noting that their preferred build only came together late in the campaign. That is one reviewer’s experience rather than a required progression path, but it gives a buyer a practical expectation for the gear loop.

Mojang's official FAQ explains mixed co-op more concretely: two or more players on one console or PC can join additional players online. It also advertises online cross-play, though it does not enumerate every supported platform pairing in that answer. A newcomer does not have to finish the first Minecraft Dungeons before starting the sequel; the FAQ says returning players may recognize references, while the new adventure can be entered directly.

One review’s playtime is a reference point, not a promise

Game Informer’s reviewer said they finished the campaign in under ten hours and felt they had seen most of the game after roughly fifteen hours. The same review praises the movement jump and the added enemy and weapon variety, while criticizing how long it took for the item system to produce a satisfying build. Other reviewers could move through the game at a different pace, especially if they explore side quests or play co-op. Use those figures as one Xbox reviewer’s route through the game, not a guaranteed completion time.
